Jos de Swart was a horse lover in heart and soul. He bought his first horse at age 18, not to uphold family tradition, but because the animals appealed to him. He immediately knew what he liked: the Dutch harness horse.
Years of training and working with the horses made for a nicely-filled trophy cabinet. Sons Ton and Nicky de Swart regularly attended competitions and were drawn into the enthusiasm of their father Jos. They went home with regional and even national prizes.
After Ton finished school at the age of 17, he immediately knew what he wanted: his own trading company. Jos, a welder at the time, sold a pair of horses and together they started the first business as their own boss. They bought a saw, drill press and a welding machine and with those they were ready to make stables for people like themselves: people passionate about horses.
The first years were difficult. Ton focused on the sale of stables and Jos led production. It was a small company, which made it difficult to perfect the many different stables. At that time, they occasionally made a horsewalker between all the stable projects, but it was by no means an important product. Prices were high and a horsewalker was far too expensive for the average horse owner. The only customers who had a horsewalker installed then were large riding schools or professional stables.
About that time, son Nicky finished his studies and joined the pair. Together, they made the design for the walker. For a long time, Jos had wanted to make horsewalkers just like other devices, plug-and-play ready. The model was revised to be modular and simple. If they produced more in series, the walker would also become cheaper and accessible to a wider audience, for horse owners just like themselves.
They made the first prototypes and the horsewalker took shape. They were ready for the next step, the name. In a weekend, the family brainstormed. Several names were proposed. But they were looking for a striking name, one that sticks. In the end it became Molenkoning – maybe a bit daring but it felt good. That same weekend, Nicky made a website and Ton put an advertisement in the horse newspaper. In the week that followed they sold three horsewalkers. Then the men knew they struck gold! They could never have imagined what happened next.
